Colette's Life



Sidonie Gabrielle Colette was born on January 28, 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, France. She had a great influence on movements regarding feminism being such a bold and unique character.

Married three times, she had numerous affairs with both men and women, such as a masculine woman nicknamed "Missy" (Mathilde de Morny), caused much controversy. Her actions, such as kissing Missy onstage, as well as cross dressing also caused additional controversy.

Colette earned many achievements during her life. She was titled the Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur in 1936 (after becoming the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. and Officier de la Légion d’Honneur) In 1934 she was inducted into the Belgian Royal Academy , and the famous Académie Goncourt. In 1949 she was elected as the president of this prestigious association.

Colette died on August 3, 1954, Paris, France. She was the first woman in France to receive a state funeral which was a huge honor. Today her legacy lives on through her creative stories of romance and love.
